Eee, I love this post! OH MOVIE, YOU ARE SO PRETTY. I really love the shots in the beginning of Anthy and Dios and the rose petals in particular.

tbh, the movie makes more sense to me as a sequel to the TV series than as an AU. Like Ohtori is an onion, and this is the next layer Utena fell into, and where Anthy had to go to look for her (because I don't think Utena went to the real world after that). I can definitely imagine TV!Utena and TV!Anthy sort of dreaming up this place in their subconscious together: Utena casts Touga as her prince instead of Dios, and Akio isn't a mastermind but is more of a pathetic laughingstock who never succeeds in manipulating Anthy.

I like this idea! It's kind of similar to how I viewed the movie when I saw it for the first time. There's enough continuity with the series that I sort of thought of it as a reboot, if that makes any sense -- idk, as if Anthy leaving Ohtori triggered a reset for everything, but instead of starting completely from scratch, things were altered for the better. But maybe I am just crazy! I'll have to watch the movie again to see what I ultimately think. I also kind of like the idea it's a wacky fever dream Utena has prior to waking up in the real world. Also, the lyrics to the song from the dance scene are really, really interesting and totally support your reading of the movie as a sequel, especially because they were intentional. HMM.

Oh man, I just watched the dance scene and it is SO SO GORGEOUS (and made me slightly teary). I was going to rewatch the Apocalypse arc tonight but maybe I'll just go for the movie instead.
