The network almost canceled it this year. The writers were supposedly asked by the network to write double scripts for the final eps. I think this is true because ED was initially contracted for last week's ep and they wrote her out of it. So if this had been the series finale, more stuff would have happened last week, and this week would have been more like the wrapup episode.
If it's any comfort, this episode was got the second-worst ratings in the history of Smallville. (Or close to. It's in the top three or four.) A finale and it got those ratings. This shit is beyond canceled; they would have never been renewed for next year if they hadn't gotten the Lana ratings bump midseason and the network had picked them up early. So next year is definitely the end, no question, and they can set it up.
