You really have nothing at all to be sorry about. We are all only responsible for our own actions and yours have been nothing but honourable ever since you discovered what was going on.
Before that, it seems you were being a good friend to Shelly. You had no reason to doubt what she had said and no responsibility to dig any further then what was presented to you.
As Mariko says, Chloe fans aren't innocent but spreading crap that isn't true is what annoys me the most.
